WHAT’S A BODRUM?

The city of Bodrum in Turkey is not on the radar of too many American and European travelers, but it ought to be. Many people interested in classical antiquity already know about Bodrum, but may not know that they know. The Greeks called it Halicarnassus, and it housed the Tomb of Mausolus, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Historians will recognize it as the home town of Herodotus, the father of the discipline of history, and also of Dionysius, historian of the Roman republic and rhetoric teacher to Roman emperors. It was ruled by the Persians and Alexander the Great, and later came under the control of the Knights of St. John or Knights Hospitaliers, who built its great castle and renamed it after St. Peter (Petronium), which gave rise to the modern name of Bodrum. This is where the Mongol advance under Tamerlane was stopped, but the Crusaders eventually gave way to Suleiman the Magnificent, who brought the city into the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. After that, very little happened in Bodrum, which is why so many ancient sites are so well preserved.

CRUSADERS AND CASTLES IN BODRUM

The present city of Bodrum was called Halicarnassus in ancient times, and according to legend was founded by Anthes, one of the sons of Poseidon. The Greek city was subsequently part of the Roman and then Byzantine Empires, then was ruled by Central Asian Tartars known as the Seljuk Turks, who are considered the ancestors of the present Turkish people. As a result of the Crusades, the Knights Hospitaliers or Knights of St. John arrived in 1402. Originally commissioned by Pope Gregory in 623 to build hospitals in the Holy Land for the care of Christian pilgrims, the Knights of St. John became one of the most powerful Catholic military orders of the Middle Ages. They fortified the city of with the Castle of St. Peter, which eventually gave the city a new name and became the site of one of the world’s most interesting archeological museums. Greek influence persisted in what became the city of Bodrum because it was settled by a large population of Greek-speaking Muslims from Crete who moved there after the former Ottoman island became part of Greece after the First World War.

AN OLD CASTLE AND A NEW MUSEUM IN BODRUM

There is not as much demand for castles as there used to be, and most of Europe is filled with old fortifications gone to seed. The castle built by the Knights of St. John in the Greek city of Halicarnassus was named for St. Peter (Petronius) and gave its name in time to the city of Bodrum. Bodrum castle was the stealth bomber or aircraft carrier of its day, a striking military innovation that combined French and English castle technology. Those who worked on the castle were guaranteed a place in heaven by the pope, and they earned it by building thick walls of green volcanic stone, supported by marble quarried from the ruins of the mausoleum that had previously occupied the site. Fourteen cisterns in the rock under the castle collected water for use during sieges, and there were 7 towers and 7 gates, each one the responsibility of one of the langues(tongues) or subunits of the order under the command of its own Bailiff. The walls around each of the gates twisted and turned, so that attackers could find no refuge from the projectiles that rained down on them from above, and a wall of carved reliefs on the castle parapet kept out missiles shot by the attackers. A three-story English tower is connected to the castle by a drawbridge on one side but otherwise presents a high rampart.
